The movie is about a group of aliens arrived on earth with a spacecraft, so linguist and scientist are trying to communicate with aliens and solve the mystery. Louise and Lan approaching the aliens and learn their language. Louise creates a vocabulary list, get to know their words one by one, and gradually find that different language can make different way of thinking. These aliens’ language is based on time, as they can feeling non-linear time, and they have non-linear Orthography. They express a sentence in a form of a circle. Each section of the circle represents one word, but sometimes a complex circle represents a sample meaning. The metaphor in the film is if you write with right hand and left hand in the same time, you have to know each word you want to write and all the story from the start. It means they can see the past, now and future.
Every written language in the world have relation with that language itself. That’s why we used mix “language” and “word”, such as Chinese means Chinese language, English means English language. Most of words on the earth is a symbol, so when we see the same symbol or word, we use thinking way of ourselves. Actually, it may be other means in different languages.
